Trail Mix

I saw this picture on a friends page on Face Book.  It was too good a chance not to add it to this blog.
I hope you enjoy the sentiment  that it brings.

So what then is trail mix on the website 21 Healthier Trail Mix Recipes the following is added

It’s lightweight, portable, and full of energy-dense ingredients like dried fruit, nuts, and chocolate — perfect for trailside noshing.

For those same reasons, trail mix can pack a hefty caloric punch, especially when we mindlessly munch while sitting around at work or home. Keep serving size to a quarter-cup or less to keep this yummy snack from sneaking into “dangerfood territory.

Thy say that the Trail mix was invented (according to legend, in 1968 by Hadley Food Orchards) to be eaten while hiking or doing another strenuous activity.

Thus it is made up of the following.  I guess this is where the idea that you can pick and choose ingredients came from.

Nuts
  • These pint-sized nutritional dynamos are loaded with healthy unsaturated fats, protein, fiber, antioxidants, vitamin E, and other essential vitamins and minerals.
  • Great healthy examples include: Almonds, pistachios, cashews, peanuts, and walnuts. Higher-calorie macadamia nuts, hazelnuts, Brazil nuts, pecans, and pine nuts.  Especially those without salt and added sugar.
Seeds
  • For those with nut allergies (or just looking to mix things up), seeds provide many of the same nutritional benefits as nuts. Hemp seeds, for example, are loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, gamma linolenic acid, protein, zinc, iron, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, and calcium.
  • Sprinkle a handful of pumpkin, sunflower, sesame, flax, or hemp seeds in trail mix for an extra boost of nutrients.
Dried Fruit
  • This sugary treat can easily become a dangerfood, so pay attention to the ingredient list and serving sizes. In moderation, dried fruit can be a great source of fibre, antioxidants, calcium, and vitamins A, C, and K.
  • Look for dried fruit options with as little added sugar and preservatives as possible (some varieties, like cranberries, are naturally quite tart and almost always sweetened with cane sugar or apple juice). It’s also pretty easy to make your own dried fruit at home in the oven.
  • Our Favorites: Dried apples, cherries, cranberries, goji berries, blueberries, strawberries, apricots, raisins, banana chips, figs, pineapple chunks, mango, and dates.
Grains
  • Add some complex carbohydrates to your custom blend for extra fibre, which boosts overall energy and helps to keep you full.
  • Choices include whole grains and avoid the highly processed cereals that add unnecessary sugar and sodium .  Good examples include:- Shredded wheat cereal, pretzels, whole-grain cereals like Cheerios, bran flakes, whole-wheat crackers, granola, toasted oats, puffed rice cereal, and air-popped popcorn can all add a little bit of crunch.
Sweets
  • Some of us like sweet items. Just remember to add these sparingly.
  • Great examples of these are:- a sprinkling of M&Ms, Chocolate chips of various kinds (peanut butter, carob, butterscotch), cacao nibs, yogurt-covered raisins, chocolate-covered coffee beans, mini marshmallows, or chocolate-covered nuts.
Savoury Extras
  • Once you have the basic mix try adding spices. Season the mix with eg. sea salt, curry, ground ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, or cayenne pepper.
  • you could challenge you tastebuds guessing with including e.g.. wasabi peas, coconut flakes, sesame sticks, dried ginger, and coffee beans.
To give you some other ideas they at least has 21 different ideas for a Trail Mix.

Thoughts from the Pantry

I have a colleague to thank for this blog.  She took staff worship  on this topic and how it relates to our lives.  She told me every time she uses this devotion another thought comes out about what is in her pantry and how it applies to the group she is talking to.

There are various types of food items in the pantry

  • Treat foods - favourites such as chips, sweets (lollies, candies), chocolate.
  • half used foods - Rice, pasta, cereal packets, biscuit.
  • Expired foods - cans of food, packaged foods, long life milk.

Some leave a mess as they spill out into the pantry and congeal around others and hold them into place.
Others gain dents, rust and bulges.  It all depends on how long they've been there.

  • Treats represent our favourite bile text and favourite faith characters we like to keep on hand.
  • Half used foods represent our mentors and parents who direct our interest and sometimes our behaviour and values.  We sometimes use and then ignore or turn away from.
  • Expired foods represent the devotional books that lie on the shelf and never been read, Herb Larsen's plan for revival we planned to do and didn't, conference we went to and gained ideas for a better life and didn't follow through with.
I think you start to get the picture of what each one represents.  Yes we have quite and lot of work to do to clean up the pantry.

Then when you do sometimes there are surprises that you find in the pantry if you haven't cleaned it for
awhile.  Do you find candles, forgotten treats, maybe medication or just maybe the kids put something in there to keep for later.

My friend told me she once found christmas decorations at the back of the pantry that someone who stayed at their house had left behind.

When we have friends come to stay they bring foods to share.  This also to add to our collection in the pantry if not consumed while there.

I'm sure you could add much more to this thought so please don't let this one expire.  It needs to carried and shared beyond this webpage.

Spiritual Vitamins

I love the following comment "Begin each day with a Spiritual Vitamin.  Sit in a quiet place and read what is written.  Drop all Concerns.  Expect nothing.  Just Be Still." ~ Wayne Austin

These vitamins are different from the ones you take each day.  To help you with your fitness and health, to get over a cold or something worse.  These one's don't fix those types of needs.  These ones are very special.  They are used when your feeling spiritually low, when times are tough and you need a boost.

Wayne suggested in his blog that you take them for 30 days and then see how your coping.  These are once a day Vitamins.  If your one of those people who can't remember to take a pill then see if you can take the Daniel challenge and do it for 10 days.

At the same time don't forget to pray and leave it with God to nourish you also.  He will richly bless you in ways you've never thought of.

Lets start with the following:-

Anxious?
Take Vitamin A.
“All things work together for good for those who love God,
who are called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28)

Blue?
Take Vitamin B.
“Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and all that is within me,
bless his holy name.” (Psalm 103:1)

Crushed?
Take Vitamin C.
“Cast all your anxiety on him,
because he cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7)

Depressed?
 Take Vitamin D.
“Draw near to God,
and he will draw near to you.” (James 4:8)

Empty?
Take Vitamin E.
“Enter his gates with thanksgiving,
and his courts with praise.
Give thanks to him, bless his name.”
(Psalm 100:4)

Healthful Living

A time to celebrate.
May 18 - 25 2013

The Adventist denomination this year is Celebrating 150 years since Ellen G White one of our founders had a couple of visisons given by God about living healthfully.  She guided the church back to a more biblical based diet and also encouraged more exercise and how to dress for the climate rather than for fashion.

In reading about the good old days of medicine, smoking was good for lungs disease, sunlight and fresh air caused germs.  Plus no one really washed that well.  Some people I've read never actually had a bath in their entire life. Then medication was a hit and miss with opium being used, mercury (yes that's right), leaches and what we call from the old western movies snake oil.  (Don't forget Coke cola started out this way.)

She actually had 5 visions about healthful living.

The 1st vision was about keeping away from smoking or chewing tobacco her and her family healthy so they could continue ministering to people.  (Her husband actually had serious depression and a stroke for a time and had to give up his ministry. Two of her sons died from illness, which could have been prevented by following a good diet, lots of fresh air etc).

The 2nd vision involved cleanliness & the avoidance of fatty food.
The 3rd vision was about the lack of faith & education of healthy living in the church. (The importance of the mother in providing for her children).

Then the 4th & 5th visions were about the work of the church.  This vision changed the churches direction and promotion of health.  Now big food producing factories around New Zealand, Australia produce healthy foods, soy milk etc.  Plus running  triathlons for children.  There are also others around the world.   World class hospitals (that teach nurses and doctors etc) and small clinics in the Pacific (now being supported by churches in the 1st world). Professionals that give up their time to volunteer on ships or do surgery in various countries that can't afford this type of intervention.

Not only that but those some churches are influencing their own local community running health programs such as Vegetarian cooking classes, CHIP programs and walking or sporting events.

Yes she and people like Joseph Bates (against alcohol, tea and coffee) have influenced how Adventist's have eaten and lived for years.

Some people still have problems with where this information came from at that time.  An Australian GP made a study in the early 2000's about her healthy guidelines and he wrote up his findings in a book "Acquired or inspired?"  He discovered that 78% have been verified by science in the 20th and 21st Century.  Yet she wrote the book back in about 1871.

The only thought I have now is just how many of us actually still maintain those healthful practices?  Have they actually given up this cause for  convenience of getting food quickly onto the table?

What mixed messages are we giving our kids about the importance of a healthy lifestyle, not just in diet, but do we think about the impact we have on the environment?  Do teach them how to make health choices, live a life of integrity?  What about living a balanced lifestyle between work, rest and play (to take on the Mars Bar ad).  To do things and eat or drink in moderation, where can they get support?  Yes what is the message that you are passing onto your family?

NOT ALL CALORIES ARE EQUAL

When you sit to dine with a ruler, note well what is before you, and put a knife to your throat if you are given to gluttony.  Do not crave his delicacies for that food is deceptive.  Prov 23: 1-3 NIV

I was flicking through books in my library to which ones I would give away and discovered a devotional on health that came from a while ago, so I decided to browse through it.  The title caught my attention.

You can’t just cut your calories and expect to lose weight.  Here’s why: by nature, your body is highly efficient in storing fat calories.  It uses only about 3% of the fat calories you eat to digest, transport, and deposit fat into your body’s fat storage areas.  That means you must exercise to vast majority out of the body if you don’t want to gain weight.

In contrast your body metabolizers from excess protein, and excretes the by products rapidly.  You can have problems with excess protein of course because it stresses your liver and kidneys by forcing them to work overtime.  But excess protein doesn’t usually add to obesity.  You have no efficient metabolic pathway in your body by which you can turn protein into fat for storage.

Calories from CHO also rarely get stored as fat, because the metabolic pathways that you body uses to convert extra CHO into fat then than store them demand that you burn a lot of calories to do the job.  It takes 24% of the calories in CHO to do this – a highly inefficient use of the energy for CHOs.

In studies in which researchers put radioactive CHO markers in food, they learned that the body converted and stored less than 1% of the CHO load as fat.  Even when people ate CHO excessively, they generally burned them up in “wasteful” metabolic processes that tended to increase the body’s metabolic rate, not reduce it – as happens in calorie – restricted diets.

Another way to put this is that 1g of fat contains 9 calories, while 1g of protein or CHO has only 4 calories.  The moral of the story is avoid fat calories – they stick to your bones! There’s an interesting bit of advice in Proverbs 23:3 about overeating.  It say’s don’t crave a ruler’s delicacies, because that food is deceptive.  How true!  Most rich food is filled with fat calories that may be tough to get rid of.

Sin is deceptive, too.  It may look and taste good, but the consequences on indulging may be harder to get rid of than fat calories.

Watch your moral diet, “for the wages of sin is death.” (Rom 6:23)

Fit for My King Part 4

Don’t you realize that in a race everyone runs,
but only one person gets the prize?
So run to win!
All athletes are disciplined in their training.
They do it to win a prize that will fade away,
but we do it for an eternal prize.
1 Corinthians 9:24 - 25 NLT

We have just finished the Olympic summer sport year and this year the winter Olympics is on later.  So we are well aware of what lengths athletes go to, to be their best.  Some of them use drugs to get there, others are clean.

As I write this my hometown is gearing up for the Tour Downunder.  The bike riders have all come in for the week long event.  They have spent time training, riding on the road for months to get fit and ready for the start of the year of cycling events.

The same goes for us as well. God through Paul is asking us to train our minds and our bodies like athletes.  To prepare for the eternal prize and to glorify God.  We are to win lives to Christ.

Sheri's prayer for this reading

"Dear God,
I commit to practice self-control over the next 30 days.
May this 30 day commitment I am making to You turn into a life
that runs the race of my faith with endurance.
In Jesus name I pray.
Amen. (p.21)

May God bless you as go throughout this coming week as God prepares, your heart, your mind and your spirit to experience his touch like never before ... the abundant life you were destined to live in him. (p.21)

The Church Pot Luck of Spiritual Gift

"I want very much to see you,
to give you some spiritual gift to make you strong.
I mean that I want us to help each other with the faith we have.
Your faith will help me, and my faith will help you."
Romans 1:11, 12 NCV

This sabbath I read an article in the RECORD my church's magazine about the importance of Potlucks in the church's ability to bring people together.  At one church I know one of the attendees would visit each church in the area when they were holding a luncheon.

Some young financially strapped student's that I know regularly decide where they will go to church for the day to get a meal.  (Sometimes they choose which church depending on which hospitality groups is cooking.)  Other churches I know of provide lunch for these students.

Some people I know will avoid them at any cost.  What is the importance of having potlucks or luncheons at a church?  The following sermonette brings light to this subject.

The Chocolate Teapot

In the past he was useless to you,
but now he has become useful for both you and me.
Philemon 1:11

Have you heard the phrase as useless as a chocolate teapot?
I hadn't really thought about it until this summer when I read about a chocolate teapot and found the book I updated my book review with.

I thought I'd find out what a chocolate teapot was.  So here are the findings from that distrustful but helpful source Wikkipedia.

chocolate teapot is a teapot that would be made from chocolate. It is commonly supposed that such a teapot would melt, and be impossible to use, therefore the term is often used as an analogy for any useless item.

A chocolate teapot, it turns out, is the ultimate in uselessness; a profoundly flawed design, whose defining characteristics make it unfit for its intended use. The metaphor makes sense; it’s obvious that if you try to make tea in a chocolate teapot, it will melt, and (boiling water being what it is), you’ll have a mess (and maybe a lawsuit) on your hands.

However author David Lawerance used this as a title for a book to give guidance to young teenagers in dealing with everyday crises that come their way.  I would suggest we are all like chocolate teapots. The world may tip in to our middle hot water or liquid and we melt.  Like the teapot in the clip from Iain Clarke.  (Sorry that it also advertises his company.)

A few people like Iain have tried to improve the chocolate teapot. One particular group found that it really depended on the thickness of the walls of the teapot whether or not it actually melted.  I believe that God knows how thick we need to be.  When  we read God's love letter everyday and pray with him and do his bidding every day we grow stronger and gain protection, so when we get into or have hot water in our lives we are made more sturdy.God is then the Chocolate Teapot Specialist.

Fruit of the Spirit

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience,                                                                kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.                                                      There is no law against things like this."                                                                                Galatians 5:22-23

I have always wanted to write a blog on this topic, I love fruit.  I actually like summer fruit the best.  Unfortunately I am unable to enjoy it.  I have major allergies to most of it.    This type of fruit does not go out of season thank goodness.  It only improves on using it.

I found this a sermonette On GodTube.  For me learning has to be visual so I enjoyed the following animation.

Fit for My King Part 3

Happy is the land whose King is nobleman
and whose leaders feast only to gain strength for their work,
not to get drunk.  Ecclesiastes 10: 17NLT

An interesting verse.  I have just read this book lately as part of my morning devotions.  King Solomon had some pretty interesting comments to make before it and after it.

What is Sheri using this verse for?

There is more here then meets the eye when you start looking at strength training and increasing our energy levels.  Here she wants to have the strength and energy to complete God's call to do his work and not have to give up because of ill health.

To work with this concept we need to look at where do we get energy?  We get it from eating plant sources which make up the carbohydrates - glucose, sucrose, maltose, fructose, lactose plus cellulose (dietary fibre, pectin).  There are just for starters.  Where do the plants get it from?  The Sun, and the wonderful process of photosynthesis occurs.  If you think about this in a spiritual concept you will find that getting our energy and comes from the Son as well.  Jesus's body was broken so we could partake of the salvation he offers.  He is also the bread of life.  He said I am the vine and you are branches.  He also said he would provide living water so we would never go thirsty. (You need water for the energy cycle to be processed in our bodies.)

If we have too much we have problems with carbohydrates being converted to fat and being stored in our bodies.  That can happen with our spiritual lives.  We can get lazy and not care also.

If we don't eat carbohydrates we have to get it from other sources such as fats and the most expensive source is protein.  These sources have other complications with them for our bodies.

To change your diet is a big deal.  9 out of 10 people who start a fitness campaign and go to weight watchers will fail.  Thus to prepare and  execute our plan we need to Fully Rely On God (FROG) as we tend to lose our focus and will power to complete with this.

In her prayer for this section Sheri asked God to "I want to gain strength by eating the food you have prepared for my body to be healthy and strong."  Not get drunk on junk food. (p.20).

I pray that as you go throughout this next week you will take this thought with you.

Fit for My King Part 2

"Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper
and be in good health, just as your soul prospers."
3 John 2 NASB

This section is about experiencing Good Health.  Sheri Rose has some interesting comments to make about good health.  But it also comes back to advertising.  In the past few weeks I have shown my food technology classes that what is advertised (such as a hamburger) is not always the way you will get that food to eat.  The tricks of the trade to make it look appealing and appertizing to eat are very different to the real deal.

With being a Christian we have to be the real deal.  As the saying goes you maybe the only bible someone reads.  What has that got to do with eating and health?

Well your the advertising,  God wants you to present yourself in the best possible light.  He wants to use you in his work of salvation. To do that; it's important to take care of your body by observing your intake of nutritional foods, and level of fitness and getting good rest.  Sheri outlines the following as a desire we all have:-
  1. Can you envision what God's people could accomplish here on earth if the body of Christ had more energy and clear minds.  We would be more involved with church activities and help in the community at a wider level.
  2. Even better we could remember the sermons we hear each week better.
  3. Also how much money would be save on medical bills and health insurance to use in other areas of our lives and God's work. (p.18)
God knows our limitations  as Sheri put it he borrowed an "earthly body" plus he also designed it in the first place.  He also has given us instructions in the bible on how to work live and nourish it.  Plus he has cared for our mental state as well with giving us hope and promises of his love and protection.

So with Sheri let us pray
"I am ready to receive from You the gift of good health.  I want my soul to prosper, and I want to walk in victory over sickness and exhaustion.  I want to commit the rebuilding of my body for Your glory, not mine. Amen."

Fit for My King...

"I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
 I know that full well."
Ps.139:14

In the last few weeks I have started to read a book written by Sheri Rose Shepherd called "Fit for My King."  To be honest it's been sitting on my shelf with the other books she has entailed "His Princess", "Warrior Princess" and a couple of others.  That are short devotionals.

This one is different and from searching the internet I found there was even a recipe book to go with this book.

In reading what Sheri wrote about how she battled with eating disorders and then how she finally over came them, her advice sounded like a message I grew up with about eating healthfully.  This message has been around for 150 years and now is main stream.

She based her idea on Queen Esther going before the king.  To quote her " In order to set our minds on our royal call, not on our cravings.  Our diets need to be about our desire to honour our King, not about denying ourselves certain foods". (p.15)

The best diet secrets ever shared are as follows, given to us by our creator:

  1. To honour God
  2. To Experience Good Health
  3. To Gain Strength and Energy
  4. For an Eternal Prize
Lets look at each one separately over the next few weeks.

1. To honour God

For this section Sheri uses the well known verse.

"Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's spirit lives in you?
If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him;
for God's temple is sacred, and you are that temple."
1Corinthians 3:16 - 17.

Today here in Australia we don't get the same sense of awe as the Middle East or Europe as our buildings don't date back for hundreds of years and have magnificent paintings like the old churches do.
We don't have the society to day that these places were the lifeblood of the community (a source of power, direction and protection.) Like the medieval society that use to start the day with mass and then have various prayers throughout the day.

But we do have the scripture where God said he will dwell with man.  That the Israelites built a temple so they could meet with God and he could be among them in the camp.  Then while talking to the woman at the well Jesus said it would not matter where we worshiped as we would worship in spirit and in truth.

To prepare for this diet Sheri then writes a prayer of commitment in which she says "I choose by faith to commit my body, my mind and my diet to You.  I make a covenant with You on this day to fast off all foods for 30 days that hinder my strength and keep me from running my race of faith for You." (p.17).

I hope you will enjoy the journey with me as I look at each of the various topics she has.  If you like the sections maybe, just maybe you'll buy the book.  (Details are in the Book review sections of this blog.)

Paid in Full - A glass of milk

"People will be rewarded for
what they say,
and they will also be rewarded for
what they do."
Prov. 12:14

One day, a poor boy who was selling goods from door to door to pay his way through school, found he had only one thin dime left, and he was hungry. He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry so brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and then asked, “How much do I owe you?” “You don’t owe me anything,” she replied. “Mother has taught us never to accept pay for a kindness.” He said, “Then I thank you from my heart.”

As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but his faith in God and man was strong also. He had been ready to give up and quit.

Year’s later that young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where they called in specialists to study her rare disease. Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately he rose and went down the hall of the hospital to her room. Dressed in his doctor’s gown he went in to see her. He recognized her at once. He went back to the consultation room determined to do his best to save her life. From that day he gave special attention to the case.

After a long struggle, the battle was won. Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it, then wrote something on the edge and the bill was sent to her room. She feared to open it, for she was sure it would take the rest of her life to pay for it all. Finally she looked, and something caught her attention on the side of the bill. She began to read the following words:

“Paid in full with one glass of milk”
Signed, Dr. Howard Kelly.
