My Health Plan Journal

I have been reading recently in the Virgin Blue "Voyager Magazine" about people who recorded on various websites all aspects of their exercise (times and noticed their improvements) over years. Their weight, food intake, flexibility and blood pressure. Just to name a few.

I thought it would be a good idea to do something that would inspire my Year 11 Health class for their first assignment and create a new habit for the rest of their life.  We now have all these means of recording these specific data on the web and get help within our grasp.  Do I really want this information broad casted to the whole world.  I'm not sure on that account.

The other factor in all this is that it is not a new years resolution but it is something that I want to change for the better in my life.  Thus in writing about it I am keeping a track of what improvements I can see over the year.  The other part is that if I have any readers that they will be a buddy and keep me on track by asking questions or making a comment about what is happening in this area of my life.

So what to record and write down what are my goals for this page. There is a journey in this some where and it will be over this year hopefully there will be some changes some where there.  Here goes.

Goals...
I have just a few.  It's good a idea to have just a 3 or 4 so you can actually tick them off.  If you have too many nothing will get done.

1. Increase the amount of exercise a week I do.
2. Try different foods that I'm allowed to eat and gain some more variety.
3. Write a list of things to do and be flexible enough to change it when needed.
4. Take time to relax.  (To chill out from time to time.)

Data...

I don't want this too regimented as then I could create another stress in my life of not personally achieving this goal.  I am suggesting a few times or days that could be of potential value.  The experts have made comments that 10 mins 3x a day is good.  However due to our sedentary lifestyles the current amount we have to work with is 90mins per day.  Some how I don't think I could do that.  I do walk around my classroom etc as I rarely sit down, due to the practical nature of my work.

Time and Days to exercise.
Time / Day - Mon / Tues / Wed / Thurs / Fri / Sat / Sun
6am
7am
5pm
6pm
7pm

* Wed is school sports.  I'm involved in this so this day is a day I don't have to spend time in actually physical activity. I get the full 90mins on this day.

Constraints to these tasks...
1. I must realise that the healthy food I might eat;  could actually make me very unwell and compromise my immune system.
2. Pain threshold is very low due to constant pain from the last 2 yrs with major shoulder and neck problems.
3. I also need to learn again how to chill out.  The above two factors and the amount of stress of major family  changes in the holidays have made me realize at the end of the school holidays that I no longer know how to do this.

Please note this is a work in progress... I will get back to it from time to time.

5/2/11

Not a good week to start on this idea. A start of a new school year with all its pros and cons plus dramas.  To top that off the 40 + heat leaves you drained and also unable to more period.
The best thing I did this week was to actually buy a perdominator to measure how many steps I walk in a day.  So I will be on my way.  Thanks to a colleague who is also going to keep us on track.

19/2/11

Well a very busy week.  I'm beginning to wonder what other exercise I can do?
In keeping track of my steps I manage to do mostly 10 - 15,000 a day.  The lowest is 8,000.
Last Monday I managed nearly 21,000 in totally.  That is just my usual everyday walking.  No extra walking in the morning etc.  A person to lose weight should be walking 10,000.
I may have to work out (weight bearing ones).  Will have to check in with a trainer to see what she says.
I feel very low about it that it's just making me tired but not losing any weight.

6/3/11

A few weeks have gone by and I have noticed that getting up early for a walk has gone out the window.  Last week I was exhausted due to other factors from work and also my shoulder and neck were playing up.  Got to the point where I didn't want to go to sleep as my arm would be numb at least twice a night.  Lie there awake trying to get feeling back into it.

Even had to wear the bigger size in clothing not a good week.  Back this week to the smaller size.  Just lots of bloat.  In reading I have found that maybe just maybe I might have a problem with my gut creating histamines from meals that are high in CHOs. So am going to try and eat more plant based protein and a little cho rather than breakfast cereals.  Well it can't hurt might not have to eat so much food either to keep up the energy levels.  Just interesting that's all.

12/3/11
Well this week has been exhausting in many ways.  I think I might have come down with a bug going around, not sure but I am very, very tired.  My limbs ache and feel heavy, my head aches.  I can't concentrate much now and just want to curl up and sleep.

I tried the change in my diet thing for breakfast.  First few days I didn't need morning tea.Though as the week went by I did because I wasn't eating so much.  I tried to reduce the portions for lunch etc too.  I was ready for tea more by the time I got home each night.

Not only have I had to change my diet so have my four legged furry felines.  I took one to the vet to update her shots and for a cat her age (just on 4) she has gingivitis.  So now they both have dental care food to get use too.  The other is going to update her shots later in April when she is with a friend (her previous owner back to her vet friend.)

The another important thing is that a close friend has just spent over a full week without one cigarette.  He has been drinking water and eating more fruit.  The hard times for him come when he is relaxing after tea.  He wants to light up.  Though he reckons he is actually saving money now and was able to have a pizza for tea the other night.  I told him he does need to reward himself from time to time.

There are many reasons why each of us need to eat healthy and also clean up our behaviour to have good health and lots of energy.  (I wish at times I could have more.)  I've been told I need to take more time for myself to relax and enjoy life.  I plan to do that this long weekend.

26/3/11

What a week nothing has gone to plan and I have been so busy that Friday night could not come soon enough.  There was no time for self, only sleep eat, mark and work.  Everything is completed and I can rest in the knowledge that next week wont be as hectic.  Planning ahead with things. Friday arvo and also went to a care group last night so had some time for the spiritual me as well.

Took a strong drowsy anti- histamine last night and so was able to sleep well until about 2pm today.  Now I have to get it out of my system so I'm on all 6 cylinders for Monday.

14/5/11
Wow it's a while since I actually wrote something here.  Things have gone pear shaped with this idea since coming back from holidays.  I have had lots of time with walking but also had very low energy levels.  On top of that I also had an enormous amount of pain in my shoulders and back.  The physio said I was very sensitive. Uh duh!!!  I needed a good massage which I finally got last wed arvo and my shoulder and back have been getting better.  It's a bit sore now and will have to give up soon to rest it once I have finished this section.

So how can you do alot of exercise when your in lots of pain.  But then they tell you don't over do it too much.  Every tried to clean and have the shoulders complain about loo duty? Yep it stuffs every thing up well.  Not impressed really.  I wish I could go shopping without pain etc...

19/11/11
Wow a long while again since I typed something.  Life has been hectic with school work and very little time for exercise.  On reflection I should of taken time to reduce the stress level by doing exercise.  However, couldn't at the time as I would work one day and then have to hit the hay really early the next night as my body was in a exhaustion  from the bug that was going around.

Bad news from all that was to put on extra weight.  Yep!  At least I had the bigger size in clothes, problem is I never know due to my allergy reactions when I will need them any way.  Due to problem mentioned below I now can't exercise so diet has to be the way.  Real fun when I have to manage how many salad veggies I can have in the week let alone a day.  Been caught out a few times, but getting better.  Yes I have managed to get back to original weight as at Easter time.  Now can I lose any more that is the question?

Any exercise is now totally out of the question as 6 wks ago twisted my ankle badly.  Lucky I had boots on as I think I would have snapped it.  I thought it was healing nicely but because I can't stay off my foot (which should have been two weeks initially) it is not healing so I found out this last week.  Why I hear you ask?  Well the physio thinks I pinched the nerve in my ankle going for what became a very short walk and a hobble home.  Then pain so much pain couldn't even have it on the ground let alone have it up resting (throb, throb).

10/11/12
It's been nearly a whole year.  Just to let you know my ankle has healed and I did exercise again.  Only to come down earlier this year with a) food poisoning and then b)shingles.  It hit my spinal cord pretty bad and my ribs area the worst.   I went to exercise a couple weeks later with this but could only walk just to the end of my block.  Yard duty totally exhausted me as well.

I went to a naturopath and decided to forgo my failsafe diet and managed only recently to find my health returning slowly.  I take heaps of Vitamins and minerals plus probiotics and it has all assisted in my recovery.  I had to return to the physio for help with my hip area but I can handle it slowly.

Yes now that spring and summer are here I just might get more energy and my health back on track.  Holidays are coming.
