Book Reviews

Books whether e-books or the old fashioned hard or soft cover ones take you on a journey to places we have never been and probably never will go, yet at the same time they make us a better person.  Especially when we apply some of the principles held within them only greater things can happen.

He that loves a book will never want a faithful friend,
a wholesome counselor, a cheerful companion, an effectual comforter.
By study, by reading, by thinking,
one may innocently divert and pleasantly entertain himself
as in all weathers, as in all fortunes.

Fit for My King
Author: Sheri Rose Shepherd
Printed: 2009
ISBN: 9780800719166

This book is a 30 day devotional that is a journey into not only looking at an eating plan but also a way for you to allow God to heal your hurt and what is controlling your eating habits.

I'm only up to day 14 but I love the way she gets the reader to think about things, write comments and really think about what it is the controls them.  A inspiring book for anyone to read.

She has some other amazing books in the Princess series that are short devotionals.

Fast Food Devotions to Go
Author: Kathy Frady

ISBN:

This is part of a series.  To be honest I haven't read it but just skimmed through some of the pages on Amazon.  It sounds interesting from the comments written about it.

Fast Food Diva Devotions to Go is filled with humorous stories that meet women on the go where they spend much of their time, waiting in line at fast food restaurants. This book helps women make healthier fast food choices for themselves and their families by offering menu suggestions from many fast food chains.

The stories are short, poignant, fun to read, and easy with which to identify. Each day's story includes a Scripture verse, prayer, and spiritual encouragement for the moms and grandmas who will purchase the book.

Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World

Author: Joanna Weaver
Printed: 2000
ISBN: 978-1-576-258-9

This is a book with a message from the Heart about reality meeting with your hunger.  It talks about what was behind Martha's message and thought in that small segment found in Luke 10:30-39.  So often Mary is considered the wise one.  However, what lies behind Martha's segment in the story.  We can all understand where she is coming from.

There is a 12 week study guide at the back of the book and resources to lead to a deeper understanding of how to develop and keep a Mary heart.

I haven't finished this book but have enjoyed it so far and learnt heaps.

The Gentle Art of Hospitality

Warm Touches of Welcome and Grace
Author : Alda Ellis  & Camille Ellerbrook
Printed: 2007
ISBN:978-0-7369-2100-8

This is a fantastic book with wonderful illustrations on how to use the 5 senses of sight, sound, smell, touch and taste to set the ambiance of your home when you invite people to your place for a meal, morning and afternoon tea.  Ideas are lovingly set out with the South touch of USA of the importance of hospitality.

I was so impressed with this book that for next year I made up a power point to explain it to my year 10 students.  The other part she mentions is something we forget but so important is how to be a great guest at someones home when invited out.  Yes there are certain standards and behaviours you can do to be polite to your hosts.

I hope you get to enjoy this beautifully presented book.  Well worth the read.

I was really impressed with this book when I read it.  I even based a worship I took for work on some of the things in this book.  My colleagues enjoyed it too.  I lent my book to one of them and they have liked it so much that I haven't seen it since.

So at the moment I have to remember what the book as about.
I know that through out it these two shared really great recipes that have been around for a while that they have loved and used.  Some of them came from friends as well.
They share snippets from their lives and how they became Christians and the struggles that they experienced.  I really hope you get a chance to find this book and read it.

Pursuing God - The Gospel according to Krispy Kreme

This is not a book but a DVD that I really like watching and have viewed it a few times and get something new out of it every time.

Louie Giglio sermonette is in building a relationship with God.  God has given us an invitation to come to know him and not to back off and tell God sorry we are so busy or have a dentist appt.  He bases his talk on Micah 6:8 "The Lord has told what is good and acceptable in His sight.  What is it that the Lord requires of you? It is to be just, to show mercy and to walk humbly with your God." (The Clear Word)

He also uses the one of the best known texts David ever wrote from Ps. 34:8 " Taste and find out for yourself how good God is Happy is the man who takes refuge in the Lord." (The Clear word)

You can know all the information and facts about Krispy Kremes and also the promise of the company and look at all the brochures and website you want, but it's not until you experience (eat) the donut, can you really understand the Krispy Kreme phenomena.  It is the same with our relationship and experience with God. Don't sell yourself short.

When Hungry Eat

Author: Joanne Felder
Published: 2007
Publisher: Allen & Unwin
ISBN: 978-0-7369-2100-8

Every year I try to find one or two books that will be interesting and educational.  I had been a busy period and every book I picked up I could only read a few pages before falling asleep.  Nothing could keep my attention.  I browsed the book shelves and came across this book.

I needed something to inspire me to read again.  With school holidays coming up and travel on public transport for a few hours I needed something to capture my attention.

Joanne Felder did that with her presentation of how starting to diet changed her perception of life and where she found herself in a new country and a mother without family support or anything familiar.  How all her experiences in life had come to this moment in time and now she needed to grow and become a more rounded person.

She did this by cutting out the fat, portioning her serves and take care to enjoy the taste of the food and also the other areas of her life. (This book looks at the Physical, social and spiritual plus the emotional side of life)

She uses her sense of humour and stories about her life and back ground as a Jew, South African living in Australia.  A really rewarding read.  Try it.
